The final field and barrier draw for the Group 2 Jeep Stutt Stakes (1600m) has been announced, which will be the seventh race run at Moonee Valley Racecourse this Friday night – September 26.
A total of nine horses have accepted for a run in the 2014 Stutt Stakes, down from 12 this time last year. The highlight of the nine would have to be Gai Waterhouse‘s Group 1 winning Almalad.
Almalad has won three of his five race starts and has earned more than $430,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
The three-year-old, who drew barrier six with Tommy Berry as jockey, has already tasted victory at the highest level after winning the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) as an unbeaten juvenile back in June.
However, since then he has failed to perform quite the same. He ran second last to Hallowed Crown in August’s Group 3 Run To The Rose (1200m) before improving in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) earlier this month. But despite a solid run that saw him box on in the worst part of the track, he missed out on a top-three finish to Hallowed Crown again.
He should be fitter on Friday and will run the same distance that earned him success at Eagle Farm back in June. This will be Almalad’s Melbourne debut though, so he will need to watch the tight turns Moonee Valley is known for as well as handling the opposite direction.
Ladbrokes.com.au 2014 Caulfield Guineas favourite Chivalry is also included in the 2014 Bill Stutt final field and barrier draw.
The three-year-old Street Cry colt has won two of his six career starts, and finished runner-up in two more, to take out a total $208,000 in total prize money.
Chivalry has drawn the coveted barrier 1 position and will be ridden by jockey Glen Boss at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
After winning the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and finishing runner-up in the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m), Chivalry is an early favourite $4.40 to take out the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11.
Zebulon and Kumaon are also included in the 2014 Stutt Stakes final field and barrier draw.
